Thomas Woolner (1825-1892)

Doctor Howitt arrived with his family on the ship Lord Goderich in April 1840 and was to have a large influence on the emerging colony of Victoria. In central Melbourne Howitt erected the prefabricated wooden cottage he had brought from England, and by 1845 his land extended from Collins Street to Flinders Lane with a frontage to Spring Street where he made a large garden. He also had pastoral interests near Yea and Cape Schanck and a farm at Caulfield.

Howitt was associated early with the Melbourne Hospital. In 1847 he became president and honorary physician of the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum and joined the new Port Phillip Medical Association. In 1853-71 he served on the Council of the University of Melbourne and on the Medical School Committee. In 1854-55 he was first vice-president of the Philosophical Society of Victoria and a member of its successor, the Royal Society of Victoria, in 1859-68.

John Robertson Tranthim-Fryer (1858-1928)

Patinated plaster bust on integral stained red pine mount
Signed lower right, and inscribed: "EN SOUVENIR OTTO LINDEN".

Otto Linden was a leading figure in the development of music in early Melbourne and Australia, organising many music and choral events, particularly Chamber music concerts, and being involved as the musical director of several societies and as the Director of the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir in Melbourne.
The sculptor John Tranthim-Fryer was highly regarded both in Australia and internationally, but the lack of his artworks coming to market has limited his recognition. He studied at the Sydney School of Arts under Lucien Henry and Archille Simonetti and at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy in London. The last sculpture by the artist to appear on the auction market was seen 40 years ago in 1987. This work is extremely well designed and technically demonstrates a very high level of sculptural ability and is faithful to the image of the sitter.

Chinese Scholars have used these rocks as a focus for meditation of religious or philosophic principles since the Song Dynasty. They serve as a tool for contemplation prior to such activities as poetry, writing or painting.
This sculpture also has a very close visual relationship to the sculptures of Barbara Hepworth.

​Oliffe Richmond was one  of Australia's truly International artist who was at the centre of the sculptural art world in the late 1950 and early 1960's England, with friends and associates including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth .
Extensive provenance available including extracts from original handwritten studio notes and photographs. This is from the original small edition done in the artists lifetime with good original patination, and not a later "variation".

Achille Simonetti was one of Australia's leading sculptors and his works are now very rare. This portrait bust is of Thomas Hussey Kelly, one of Sydney's most prominent business men. His business interests included wool and mining. He was very active in all branches of the arts,and Tom Roberts painted his portrait. Kelly was Commodore of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Extensive research available.
